New Light Source Project
aiming for unique studies of microscopic motions in matter of all kinds
NLS Chemical Sciences Workshop
22nd - 23rd May 2008 - Merrison Lecture Theatre, Daresbury Laboratory
This workshop will bring together researchers in several fields: gas phase molecular dynamics, surface science and catalysis, quantum chemical control, and condensed phase photo-chemistry and -biology. A key unifying theme of these topics is understanding reaction pathways from dynamic measurements, and a major role of the NLS will be the probing and control of such dynamics.

In addition, there are several discussion sessions planned for the workshop, and attendees are welcome to prepare a slide or two to contribute to the discussion.
The objective for this workshop is to determine the key long term objectives for research in chemical science and to define the light source capability required to meet those objectives. We hope to capture the current activities in this area and to examine the future prospects for both FEL based and conventional laser based work in the field, since we anticipate that the NLS will combine FEL and convention laser based light sources. We would also like the workshop to examine the balance between objectives which can be achieved by exploiting the existing array of international next generation light sources and those which will require a new UK capability.
Following this workshop a working group will be established to capture the outcomes of the workshop which will form part of the broad facility specification to be presented to the STFC Physical and Life Sciences Committee in October 2008.
This meeting is being convened by Dr Jonathan G. Underwood (University College London) and Prof Wendy Flavell (University of Manchester).
